SEVENTH GENERATION
78. James SLATER was born about
1748. He was buried on 21 Oct 1822 in Horndon-on-the-Hill, Essex.
James was a publican at each of Horndon-on-the-Hill's pubs. From
the Victualler's Sureties Register it has been established that
he was the publican at 'The
Swan' from at least 1781 to 1800, and at 'The
Bell' from 1805 to 1813.

He appears in the Horndon-on-the-Hill Land Tax records
from 1781 - 1800 (only years checked so far) paying the tax on
land/properties owned by others.
A typical years entry is that of 1789 :-
Owner Mr Graves / Occupier James Slater £1-8s
During the 1811 census extra details were collected in this
Parish than normally were for that census and these have
survived. For James Slater it lists :-
Slater Jas., Victualer, Household of 3 males & 3 females.
Royal Exchange Insurance Policy :-
16 July 1787
James Slater of Horndon-on-the-Hill, Victualer.
On household furniture in his dwelling house & brewhouse afs
or adj? (aforesaid/adjoining?) timber built and tiled situate in
the Parish afd (aforesaid) £80.
On wearing apparel £15.
On Plate £10.
On utensils & trade £95
On utensils & stock na stable? and ...... £50
Total £250
He was a beneficiary in his brother William's Last Will and
Testament.
It is not known where he originated from. The will of his brother list the
siblings and their parishes, however they are spread out from South Essex, up
through North Essex and Suffolk. A possible clue is that two of the
beneficiaries in that will were from Overton and Otton Belchamp in North Essex.
There are Slater families in this area, in particular Toppesfield, however the
Parish Register was neglected in the period around James birth. A James Slater
married an Ann Boreham in Toppesfield in 1770 giving rise to the possibility
this is my James as when he married Ann Fretton in 1778 he was a widower.
He was married to Anne Fretton on 2 April 1778 in Great Burstead, Essex.
