Last Will and Testament of

Richard Baker - 1672

In the name of God Amen I Richard Baker of Orsett in the County of Essex Yeoman being sick and weak but of perfect memory thanks be to God for it do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following First I commit my soul into the hands of God that gave it and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executor and for my worldly goods I give and bequeath in manner and form following

First I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Jone twenty pounds to be paid by my executor within one year after my decease and not before but if she shall happen to be with child my mind is that my executor shall pay her twenty pounds more within one year after she shall be delivered of her child and my mind is that she shall continue with my executor one year after my decease if she shall continue so long unmarried and my mind is further that my executor shall let her have all my last wife’s clothes and her own that she brought with her

And for all my worldly goods and lands whatsoever I give and bequeath unto my son John Baker and paying all my debts do make and ordain him my full and whole executor and I make my loving friend Mr Jasper Kingsman of Horndon on the Hill and William Hogg of Orsett tanner overseers of this my Last Will and Testament And further my will is that in case my son John Baker my executor shall take any ???course to waste and spend that which I shall leave I give my overseers Mr Jasper Kingsman and William Hogg full power to enter upon my goods that I shall leave him, to be disposed on at their discretion while they shall think him fit to spend and to no other purpose and revoking all other Wills I do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament, in witness whereof I have unto set my hand and seal this twenty sixth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and seventy one
