Last Will and Testament of

John Hanscombe - 1718

In the name of God Amen I John Hanscombe the elder of Shillington in the County of Bedford husbandman being ill of body but of perfect mind and memory blessed be God for the same therefore do make this my Last Will and Testament as followeth First I commit my soul into the hands of Almighty God my maker hoping by the sole merits of Jesus Christ my only Saviour and redeemer to have all my sins remitted and to be made ..? of eternal life for my body I commit to the earth whereof it was made to be buried such seemly ...? as my executors hereafter named shall think fit as for that worldly estate which it hath pleased God to bless me withall I dispose thereof as followeth

Imprimis I give and devise unto Thomas Hanscombe and Anne Hanscombe my son and daughter and for their heirs and assigns forever equally to be divided between them all that my cottage and tenement with the appurtenances situate and being in Shillington aforesaid now in the occupation of Peter Bacon or of his assigns

Item I give and devise unto Anne my loving wife for and during the term of her natural life all that my messuage or tenement with the appurtenances in Shillington aforesaid now in my own occupation and also all those my three closes or pightells of pasture ground with the appurtenances and orchard in Shillington aforesaid belonging to the messuage aforesaid now also in my own occupation

And after her decease then I give and devise the messuage or tenement three closes or pightells of pasture ground and orchard unto Gilbert Hanscombe my son and to his heirs forever of all which premises I have made a surrender to the use of my will

Item all the rest of my personal estate goods and chattels unbequeathed my debts legacies and funeral expenses first paid and discharged I give and devise unto the said Anne my loving wife and Gilbert Hanscombe my son whom I do make constitute ordain and appoint executors of this my Last Will and Testament and revoking all former Wills herebefore by me made

In witness whereof I the said John Hanscombe have hereunto set my hand and seal to this my Will contained in one sheet of paper this six and twentieth day of May 1718 and in the fourth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George by the grace of God King of Great Britain France and Ireland defender of the faith

Signed sealed published and delivered to be the Last Will and Testament of the said John Hanscombe in the presence of us who subscribed our names as witnesses hereto at the request and in the presence of the ..? of the said testator
