SEVENTH GENERATION

William SWABEY was born about 1744. He was buried 23 Dec 1829 (age 85) in Aldbury, Hertfordshire.

William is the first Swaby recorded in the Parish of Aldbury. I believe that he was christened in Halton, Buckinghamshire in 1743. Halton is only 9km from Aldbury. There is no other nearby christening for a William Swaby or its variant spellings in the nearby area to have been the right age to marry in 1773, or match the age at burial of William of Aldbury.  There are gaps in the Halton parish register which is why the christening has not been indexed by the LDS on the IGI or family search, and hence not found before, however he has now been indexed (2017) on the Buckinghamshire baptism index on FindMyPast.co.uk. from the Buckinghamshire Bishop's (Archdeacon's) Transcripts :-
Halton - Swedy, William, 24 Apr 1743 son of Francis & Mary (Note the incorrect transcription in the online record of Sweby as Swedy, however the original Archdeacon's Transcript does show it to be Sweby.)

No William appears in the Buckinghamshire marriage or burial indexes for this time period indicating that he left the County. Hence my conclusion that the William who turned up in Aldbury ca. 1773 or shortly before is the William from Halton. In addition William named one of his sons Daniel which is not a common forename. William of Halton had an uncle named Daniel which may be why he named his own son as such.

His occupation has been recorded as :-
Labourer (Militia Lists 1775, 1778, 1782, 1783, 1784)

Recorded addresses :-
Aldbury, Herts (Militia Lists 1775, 1778, 1782, 1783, 1784, Marriage 1773, Burial 1829)

He was married to Mary YERBY on 21 Oct 1773 in Tring, Hertfordshire.

105. Mary YERBY was christened on 6 Nov 1748 in Tring, Hertfordshire. She was buried on 14 Jan 1827 in Aldbury, Herts.

Recorded addresses :-
Tring, Herts (Baptism 1748, Marriage 1773)
Aldbury, Herts (Children's baptisms 1774-1793, Burial 1829)

Mary appears in the Aldbury Churchwarden's Accounts for 1801 :-
'Paid Mary Swabey - washing the Surplice 10s'
As Mary's daughter Catherine was shown as a Laundress in the 1861 census it is quite likely from the above account entry that Mary was also a Laundress.

The ancestry from Mary onwards is only from the IGI and has not been further researched in the Tring Parish Registers etc. as yet.
