David GALBREATH was born on 20 Nov 1833 in Whitechapel, London¹. He was christened on 1 Mar 1834 in St. Mary, Whitechapel¹. He died on the 10 March 1905 in Bermondsey Infirmary², and was buried on 15 Mar 1905 in Nunhead Cemetery³.

David's sister Ann migrated to Australia (1852?) where she married Francis Scammell in 1856 in Victoria. Two letters survive from the Scammell family to David. Letter of 1876 & Letter of 1877.

1882 - City of London Workhouse Admission & Discharge Register :-

• David Galbraith, age 49 (1833) 90 Fetter Land (White Horse Pub), Married, Occupation - Traveller, Able bodied - No, admitted 9 Jan 1882, dishcarged 16 Feb 1882 by own request.
• There is little doubt it is David Galbreath as the age and occupation are correct. Why was David in the workhouse? Why was his address given as a pub? It is possible that he was admitted to the infirmary as he is recorded as not being able bodied.

1884 - David was charged with theft :-

• 19 May 1884 Middlesex - Return of persons committed to appear at the adjoined General Session at Clerkenwell - David Galbraith, Larceny by Servant and receiving.
• Calendar of prisoners tried at Assizes & Quarter Sessions - Her Majesty's Prison Clerkenwell
  David Galbraith, age 51, Occup - Clerk, Received in Custody 1 May 1884, Warrant 8 May, Tried 20 May, Stealing 11 belts and other articles, value £3 11s., the goods of Thomas Atkin, his master, Guilty of Larceny as a Servant, Sentence 2 days - discharged.
• There is no doubt this is David Galbreath, age and occupation in leather goods matches his other records. The sentence seems to be very light at 2 days. It is possible that despite the offence his master spoke up for him, perhaps giving him a second chance.

He was married to Mary BUTCHER on 19 Feb 1859 in St. Andrews, Bethnel Green, Mdx¹.

Mary BUTCHER was born on 21 Nov 1835¹. She was baptised on 30 Nov 1835 in West Wickham, Kent¹. In the 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1911 censuses Mary gave her place of birth as West Wickham, the same place she was baptised. However in the 1901 census she gave her place of birth as Keston, Kent, a neighbouring Parish. She died at 229 Lynton Road, Bermondsey on the 2nd April 1916.⁵

Mary's Baptismal Certificate records her birth as "BB" ie. Base Born or illigitimate.

ii. Amy GALBREATH was born 19 June 1861 in Mile End Old Town, London. She was christened on 4 Aug 1861 in St. Dunstan, Stepney, London¹.
iii. Arthur GALBREATH was born in 1863 in Stepney, London. He was a Wharehouseman (Postal Goods Manufactory, 1881 census).
iv. Marian GALBREATH was born on 4 Dec 1864 in Mile End Old Town, London. She died in 1940. She was a Domestic Servant (out of employ, 1881 census).
v. Emily GALBREATH was born in 1867 in Stepney, London.
8 vi. Edwin GALBREATH was born on 11 Apr 1868 in Mile End Old Town, London. He died on 11 Feb 1909 in the Camberwell Infirmary, London. He was buried on 17 Feb 1909 in Nunhead Cemetery.
vii. Donald GALBREATH was born about 1870 in Stepney, London.
viii. John T GALBREATH was born in 1872 in Stepney, London.
ix. Fanny C GALBREATH was born in 1874 in Stepney, London.
