Back to William Liddamore

William LIDDAMORE  & William LIZEMORE

Liddermore / Liddamore etc
Lizamore / Lizzamore / Lezimore / Lissamore etc.

A paper discounting the erroneous pedigrees which confuse William Liddermore of Euston (& Barnham & Barningham) in West Suffolk with William Lizemore of Halesworth, Hopton & Bramfield in East Suffolk. These erroneous pedigrees treat both Williams as one person, intermingling the children of both William's, and hence have him flitting back and forward between the two regions.

This theory was first put to me in about the year 2000 and the only evidence the person had used was the IGI, (or Family Search as it now is known on the Mormon's or LDS website). Many people are not aware that the Mormon's IGI is not complete. In fact for East Anglia, that is Norfolk, Suffolk & Essex, it was only about 25% complete at the time this eroneous Lizzamore pedigree was constructed, i.e. about 75% of pre 1837 baptisms and marriages were missing from the index. The following extract from Suffolk in 'The Phillimore Atlas & Index of Parish Registers' highlights this:

The IGI column is far from complete, and many parishes that are shown as being on the IGI are only partially indexed, e.g. Halesworth only has from 1813-1837 on the IGI. All the rest is un-indexed ie. missing from the IGI index.

Hence a pedigree cannot be made up from the Suffolk IGI containing only 25% of available records, but this is what the original researcher of the Lizamore line has tried to do. She has taken IGI entries from the Halesworth area in the North East corner of Suffolk, and combined them with entries from the West Suffolk parishes of Euston, Barham & Barningham.

Unfortunately this erroneous pedigree has since been taken up by new Lezimore researchers as fact.

The following parish map of Suffolk highlights the separation between the two areas :-

There is further evidence showing that there are two separate Williams, one in West Suffolk centred on Euston, the other in East Suffolk in the Halesworth area.

William Lizamore & wife Mary had 3 children baptized in Bramfield (near Halesworth) [Bramfield Parish Register extracts] :-
Peter Took LIDEMY OR LIZZAMORE - Birth: 30 Dec 1809 Chr 31 Dec 1809
Elizabeth LIZZAMORE OR LIDEMY - Birth: 16 Apr 1812Chr: 19 Apr 1812
Eliza LIZZAMOORE - Chr 16 Jul 1815

However William Liddemore of West Suffolk married Letitia (Letty) MASH/MAISH on 22 Jan 1810 in Euston. Letty was buried on the 6 Jan 1811 in Euston.
William then married Sally FENNER widow on 2 Feb 1816 in Euston (William shown as a widower).

This definitely confirms that these are two separate Williams, for how could William Lizamore & his wife Mary be still married and having children in 1809 & 1812, before and after William Liddamore of Euston married Letitia in 1810 and her death in 1811. They must be two different Williams.

Additionally both Williams had sons named James, and both these sons appear in the subsequent censuses from 1841. Two James with two different fathers named William.

I hope that in future the Lizamore researchers will not intermingle their Halesworth / Hopton / Bramfield William Lizamore with the Liddamores from the Euston area.
