to Matthias Denman 

To all whom these presents shall come I Thomas Ward Sheriff of the County of Essex in the State of New Jersey send greeting

Whereas a writ of the State of New Jersey issued out of the inferior Court of Common Pleas holden at Newark in and for the County of Essex was directed and delivered to me then being Sheriff by which said writ I was commanded that of the goods and chattels, lands and tenements of Gozen Ryerse and John Stites in my bailiwick I should cause to be made the sum of three hundred and thirty eight dollars and fifty cents which Samuel Tyler Esq. before the Judges of the said Court at Newark aforesaid recorded against them of debt as also eighteen dollars and sixty one cents to which to the said Samuel Tyler in the same Court before the Judges aforesaid were adjudged for his damages which he has sustained as well by occasion of the detaining that debt as for his costs and charges by him about his suit in that behalf expended whereof the said Gozen Ryerse and John Stites is convicted as appears to us of record and that I should have those monies before the Judges of the said Court at Newark aforesaid on a certain date now past to render unto the said Samuel Tyler for his debt and damages above mentioned

By virtue of which said writ I took seized and levied ten and one half shares of the Columbia manufactory situated at Springfield in the County of Essex aforesaid and having advertised the same according to law in such case made and provided agreeably to such advertising of the sale thereof by me made I did on the first day of October instant at Public vendue (US – public auction sale)  and outcry sell four of the aforesaid shares said to be one sixth part of the whole to be the same more or less unto Matthias Denman for the sum of two hundred dollars he being the highest bidder.

Now know ye that I the said Thomas Ward Sheriff as aforesaid by virtue of and pursuant to the above said writ and by force and agreeably to the law of the State of New Jersey in such case made and provided and also for and in consideration of the said sum of two hundred dollars to me in hand paid before the ensealing and delivery of these presents the receipt of which I hereby acknowledge and thereof exonerate, discharge and acquit the said Matthias Denman his heirs and assigns forever have granted bargained and sold and by these presents to grant, bargain, and sell unto the said Matthias Denman his heirs and assigns forever all the right and title of the said Gozen Ryerse and John Stites to the aforesaid four shares with all the appurtenances thereto belonging or in any wise appertaining to have and to hold all and singular the above described four shares unto the said Matthias Denman his heirs and assigns to the only proper use, benefit and behoof of him the said Matthias Denman his heirs and assigns forever

and I do hereby for myself my heirs, executors and administrators, covenant, promise, and agree to and with th said Matthias Denman his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns that I have not done or suffered, or cause to be done or suffered and moreover have nothing whereby to charge or encumber the aforesaid shares and premises and that the said right and title of the said Gozen Ryerse and John Stites of in and to the same shares shall be and remain to the said Matthias Denman his heirs and assigns forever a free and perfect state of inheritance in fee simple in as full and ample a manner as I the said Thomas Ward by virtue of the said writ might, could or ought to convey the same.

Sealed and delivered in the presence of Elisha Bondinot, Elias Van Arsdale

Be it remembered that on this fourth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred personally appeared before Elisha Bondinot Esquire one of the Justices of the Supreme  Court Thomas Ward Esquire the grantor above mentioned and acknowledged he had executed the above instrument of writing as his voluntary act and deed and delivered it for the uses and purposes therein mentioned

Taken and acknowledged before me the day and year above written  Elisha Bondinot

4th October 1800 received of Matthias Denman the sum of two hundred dollars the consideration money mentioned in the af’d deed. $200
