TENTH GENERATION

Henry SPITTY (SPITTEY) was buried on 15 Jul 1699 in Rettendon, Essex.1 At the time of his death Henry was living in the neighbouring Parish of East Hanningford (as noted in the Rettendon Burial Register). His birth / baptism details are not known at this time. *Note :- The Rettendon Parish Registers are no longer extant before 1678, nor are South Fambridge (his fathers residence) before 1754.

The Hearth Tax returns of 1665 & 1670 show Henry paying tax on 3 hearths in Rettendon. A Henry also paid 2 hearths for a vacant house in Hockley in both years. It is possible this is the same Henry as he inherited property from his father in Hockley.

Henry left a Will.

Marriages

1st, possibly to Joan WEST on 1651 at Maldon All Saints, Essex.1 Henry was of of South Fambridge, and Joan a widow of Hockley.1  If this a marriage of Henry then either all his children by this marriage pre-deceased him (not named in his will) or it was childless. Otherwise there is another undiscovered 1st marriage for Henry which could well be the case considering the lack of Rettendon & Sth Fambridge registers at this time.

2nd to Sarah RICHARDSON on the 7th April 1681 at Bowers Gifford.1 Henry was of Rettendon, a widower, and Sarah a singlewoman. Sarah may have been the daughter of Aaron Richardson of South Benfleet, as a Mary Richardson thus described married Henry Read at Bowers Gifford on 8th Dec 16811, the next entry in the Register after Henry's marriage. Henry named a Henry Read as his brother in law in his will.

Susan was buried on 4 April 1685 in Rettendon.1

They had at least two children :-

childi. Sarah was christened on 3 April 1682 in Rettendon, Essex.1 She was buried on 16 Aug 1682 in Rettendon.1
childii. Henry was christened on 12 March 1683 in Rettendon.1

Henry along with the two son's of the 3nd marriage are all mentioned in their father's will.

Henry's 3nd wife was Elizabeth, but no marriage entry has been found yet.

Children were:

childi. Thomas SPITTEY was christened on 15 Sep 1687 in Rettendon.1
childii. Ambrose SPITTEY was christened on 26 Dec 1688 in Rettendon.1 He was buried on 22 Oct 1710 in Bowers Gifford, Essex.1
