Richard's father
John snr. was associated with the establishment of New Providence College, Rhode
Island (now Brown University). His daughter Margaret married the College's first
President, the Rev. James Manning, and his son Richard was a student :-
"The first student to be enrolled ...was William Rogers... who made his
appearance Sept 3, 1765, and was the only undergraduate for nine months and
seventeen days, when Richard Stites of Elizabethtown, New Jersey, a
brother-in-law of the president (Rev. James Manning), was
matriculated." ......... "Richard Stites, was commissioned as
Captain in Heard's Brigade of the Continental Line, and was mortally wounded at
the battle of Long Island. He was "the first Brown graduate," says a
writer in a recent number of the Brunonian "to give his life for his
Country".1
